Last night OZ Minerals was the recipient of the Indigenous employment and retention award at the Australian Mines and Metals Association (AMMA) 2011 National Conference. This follows on from receiving the South Australian Premiers Social Inclusion in Mining and Energy award on 4 May.

OZ Minerals Managing Director and CEO Terry Burgess said, “OZ Minerals, its contractors and partners are all seriously committed to sharing the benefits of our mining operation with our neighbours. It is wonderful for all the people who make these programs happen and for the trainees and the graduates to be recognised for their hard work and commitment.”

“This extension of what we do as a mining company is not without challenges but the success we have makes the programs highly beneficial for us and for the community.”

At the AMMA awards night OZ Minerals was recognised for its training program and employment initiatives resulting in the successful engagement of indigenous Australians in employment within a local community.

The Premier’s Social Inclusion award which was presented by Premier Mike Rann at the SACOME 2011 Annual Resources Industry Dinner on 4 May was for excellence in community programs including employment training.

Both awards highlight OZ Minerals commitment to delivering social benefits to the community in which it works. In particular it highlights the company’s very successful Pre-Employment Training Program (PEP).

About OZ Minerals Pre-employment Training Program
The Pre-Employment Training Program allows local indigenous and non-indigenous people who have been long-term unemployed and have not worked within the mining industry to gain a qualification, work experience and ultimately employment at the Prominent Hill mine. Six pre-employment training programs have been completed since 2006 and a total of 51 students (local indigenous and non-indigenous) have graduated through the program. In 2010 the program targeted trainees from the the Anangu Pitjanktjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) lands, with eight graduates offered full-time roles at Prominent Hill. This program is the first ever held for the APY lands with guaranteed employment outcomes.

The Pre-Employment Training Program is one way in which OZ Minerals can help secure employees and at the same time achieve our aim of employing as many local people as possible.

About Prominent Hill
OZ Minerals operates the Prominent Hill copper gold mine in northern South Australia, located approximately 130 Kilometres from Coober Pedy. The mine has a preferential local employment policy and employs approximately 600 people of whom over 80 percent are from South Australia.

OZ Minerals employs around 20 local businesses at Prominent Hill. They range from local plumbing services, concrete services to fencing contractors. In 2010 we spent approximately $12 million in the Coober Pedy and local region and another $7 million in the Upper Spencer Gulf and a further $80 million over the rest of South Australia.
